Ahead of Nvidia's (NVDA) fourth quarter earnings report, there's been notable activity in ETFs (exchange-traded funds) tied to the tech giant’s performance. However, broader market trends (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) reveal a shift away from US equities in favor of assets like gold (GC=F) and international stocks. CFRA research head of ETF data and analytics Aniket Ullal joins Catalysts hosts Madison Mills and Seana Smith to discuss the outlook for US large-cap stocks amid changing market dynamics. "Flows have actually been fairly strong into ETFs this year. We've seen over $130 billion so far this year into ETFs. A lot of that actually into equity ETFs," Ullal says. "As far as performance goes in the last few weeks, particularly since tariffs were first announced, we've seen non-US equity ETFs outperform US equity ETFs." Ullal highlights that despite recent shifts in market sentiment, Nvidia's earnings could serve as a key catalyst for US equities. Additionally, he notes that "crypto tends to be very sensitive to [interest] rates," influencing ETF flows and investor sentiment. Coinbase (COIN) CEO Brian Armstrong announced that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) intends to drop its lawsuit against the cryptocurrency exchange on Friday. Bitwise senior crypto research analyst Ryan Rasmussen joins Asking for a Trend with Julie Hyman to discuss what the SEC dropping the case against Coinbase means for the crypto space and what it signals about the US President Donald Trump's second administration's approach to crypto regulation. Bitwise operates several of its own bitcoin (BITB, BITC, BTOP) and crypto (BITQ, BITW) ETFs. "It's a really monumental moment for the industry that the SEC has dropped its years-long tirade against Coinbase," Rasmussen says, explaining, "I think it's a huge signal to the market that the actual regulatory pivot that we've been hearing is going to happen, that it's actually happening in Washington already." The analyst tells Yahoo Finance he's "very excited" as "we enter this next phase of growth, of mainstream adoption, and playing by the rules" for crypto. He adds that "part of that growth will be leaving [meme coins] in the past, and I think we're on the path to do that, but it won't be, necessarily, a smooth ride there." One year has passed since the SEC approved spot bitcoin ETFs, with these funds accumulating over $100 billion in total assets during their first year of trading. Bitwise Asset Management CIO Matt Hougan joins to discuss bitcoin's (BTC-USD) outlook for 2025. Bitwise operates several of its own bitcoin (BITB, BITC, BTOP) and crypto (BITQ, BITW) ETFs. "As we look into 2025, the number of tailwinds pushing this industry forward is just extraordinarily strong," Hougan explains, citing ETF inflows, the incoming Trump administration, institutional investments, and other factors. He notes that there are "too many long-term positives" driving the market. Discussing the incoming Trump administration, Hougan outlines several key steps for the first 100 days: securing confirmation for crypto-friendly nominees, halting regulatory "lawfare," and implementing enhanced stablecoin and market structure legislation. He suggests these actions could position the US as "the crypto capital of the world." To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Asking for a Trend here.
